Jerry Canaan is a director with the firm. His emphasis is medical and dental malpractice defense and legislative lobbying
in the Virginia General Assembly. He regularly defends dentists, hospitals, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. He also
represents individual health care practitioners with licensing disputes before the Board of Medicine, Board of Nursing, Board of Pharmacy,
Board of Dentistry and Board of Optometry, and he monitors important regulatory developments in these areas. He is admitted to practice law
in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia,
and the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit. As a member of the Governmental Relations Team, Mr. Canaan regularly appears before the
Virginia General Assembly, the Department of Health Professions, the Health Regulatory Boards and other political organizations.
Mr. Canaan has litigated various types of medical and dental malpractice cases including: birth injuries, pulmonary embolism,
angioedema, lung cancer, medication administration errors, tricyclic overdoses, myocardial infarction, avascular necrosis, patient suicide,
gastric bypass, emergency medicine, pharmaceutical errors, colorectal cancer, colonoscopies, stroke, fractures, shoulder surgery,
operating room fires, medical equipment malfunctions, false positive lab results, patient falls, TMJ, oral and maxillofacial surgery,
orthognathic surgery, and orthodontics.
Mr. Canaan frequently lectures on recent legislative actions, case law developments, and risk management strategies to avoid civil litigation.
Mr. Canaan earned his B.A. in political science and English from Virginia Tech, and his J.D. from the T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. Upon graduation from law school, he was a clerk in the Chief Staff Attorney's
Office of the Virginia Supreme Court.
Mr. Canaan is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association (member, Health Law Section), the Virginia Association of
Defense Attorneys (member, Medical Malpractice Section), the Defense Research Institute, and the American Health Lawyers Association.
