Walt Sowers is an associate in the firm. Mr. Sowers has over ten years experience in representing hospitals, nursing homes, and physician practices in Virginia and West Virginia. He has worked closely with senior hospital management on corporate, operational, and contractual matters. In addition, Mr. Sowers provides daily support to hospital compliance and risk management departments on all aspects of regulatory compliance, including HIPAA, Stark, Anti-Kickback, tax exempt matters, EMTALA, Medicare reimbursement, and hospital Conditions of Participation.

Representative work for Mr. Sowers includes the following: negotiated exclusive provider agreements, physician employment contracts, and service agreements; structured physician recruitment arrangements; developed HIPAA compliance programs and policies; advised hospitals on reporting requirements to the National Practitioner Data Bank and Virginia Board of Medicine; prepared informed consent, admission, and ABN forms; counseled hospital security on use of force and detention of mentally ill patients; assisted hospital risk managers with difficult patient care issues; represented providers in Virginia Medicaid audits; handled guardianship proceedings for incapacitated patients; and, filed responses on behalf of individual practitioners with the Virginia Department of Health Professions.

Mr. Sowers received his B.A. from Emory University in 1992, and his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1995.

He is a past Chair of the Health Law Section for the Virginia State Bar (2003-04). He is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association. Active in the community, Mr. Sowers served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County from 2001-2007. From 2004-2007, he served as President of the BBBS Board.
