
4701 Cox RoadSean Byrne is a director in the firm. He is a litigation attorney representing hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers across the Commonwealth in the defense of medical malpractice cases. Mr. Byrne actively litigates civil matters in state and federal courts throughout Virginia. He also frequently provides health care risk management advice. Mr. Byrne has represented clients in pre-suit investigation, mediation, and as the lead attorney at trial. He has argued cases on appeal before the Virginia Supreme Court.
Mr. Byrne is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Richmond Law School. After graduation from law school, he was a Federal Clerk, working with United States Magistrate Judge William T. Prince, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division. He is admitted to practice law in Circuit Courts throughout Virginia, in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and in the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Byrne is trained as a Virginia Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) and strives to put this medical knowledge to use when defending his clients. He has litigated a wide assortment of legal and medical issues. Mr. Byrne has also represented litigants in a variety of general civil trial matters including premises liability, employment law, patient privacy violations, collections / business disputes, construction, and other contract cases.
Mr. Byrne has been an Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Richmond School of Law since 2000. He teaches Lawyering Skills; a course that covers legal writing, legal research, interviewing, counseling, negotiation, motions practice, professionalism and oral advocacy. He has also designed and taught courses at the University of Richmond on medical malpractice law, and the intersection of law and medicine. These classes have been offered in the Law School, the School of Arts and Sciences, and in the Paralegal Studies program in the School of Continuing Studies. In 2010, Mr. Byrne will teach Virginia Civil Procedure at the University of Richmond Law School.
Mr. Byrne has been recognized for his trial success in the Virginia Medical Law Reports Top Defense Verdict list in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. He has been honored as a Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2008 and 2009, and as a Virginia Super Lawyer in 2010. Mr. Byrne was recognized in the 2010 and 2011 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of medical malpractice defense.
Mr. Byrne frequently lectures on legal developments and health care risk management strategies to avoid, prevent, and survive civil litigation. He has authored numerous publications in legal and medical journals on issues of law and medicine, focusing primarily on areas of interest in medical malpractice defense.
