Insurance Coverage

John represents insurance companies in complex coverage litigation in numerous state and federal courts, including courts in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  He also advises insurers on a variety of coverage matters, such as policy rescission, extra-contractual liability avoidance, as well as the duty to defend and reservation of rights.  John’s practice involves a wide range of insurance coverages, including commercial general liability, professional liability, technology errors and omissions liability, directors’ and officers’ liability, fiduciary liability, commercial automobile/garage, auto, workers’ compensation, umbrella, property, business interruption, and various specialty coverages.

John brings a unique perspective to the representation of insurers, having served as counsel to a multi-line insurance company where he worked with the company on a day-to-day basis in the areas of claims, underwriting, product development, and regulatory compliance.  He developed several specialty coverage forms used by the company.

John currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Professional Liability Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee.

Prior to joining Hancock, Daniel, Johnson & Nagle as a shareholder, John worked with Shaw Pittman, LLP, in the firm’s Tysons Corner, Virginia office, where he handled high exposure insurance coverage cases as part of the firm’s national insurance coverage litigation section.
